Comment reconnaître une Annonciation ? Quels cadeaux apportent les mages à l'Enfant Jésus ? Pourquoi les premiers chrétiens ont-ils représenté le Christ sous la figure d'un berger ? Jusqu'au XIXe siècle, l'art occidental fut en grande partie religieux et il s'offre toujours au visiteur dans les musées, les expositions, les églises... Or le spectateur a de plus en plus de mal à comprendre ce qui lui est donné à voir. Une panne de transmission culturelle fait que, aujourd'hui, on ne sait plus trop décrypter les symboles du christianisme. En raccordant l'image aux Écritures et autres textes qui l'ont inspirée, en fournissant les explications de tous ordres qui permettent d'accéder à une certaine profondeur de sens et de temps, les auteurs proposent ici un guide d'accès aux oeuvres de l'art religieux chrétien. Mais il fallait surmonter une difficulté majeure : comment initier tous ceux qui n'identifient pas immédiatement une femme et un ange face à face comme une « Annonciation » ou un homme à genoux dans un jardin comme « L'agonie à Gethsémani » ? A breakdown in cultural transmission means that today, we don't know how to interpret the symbols of Christianity. By linking the image with the Scriptures and other inspirational texts, by providing explanations of all kinds that allow us to access a depth of meaning and time, the authors bring us a guide to the religious art of Christendom. But first, they had to overcome one major difficulty: to initiate all those who do not immediately identify a woman and an angel, sitting face to face, as an "Annunciation" or a man kneeling in a garden as Christ's agony in Gethsemane. To meet this challenge, they have created a "guide to the identification of scenes" that permits readers to start out from easily recognised elements - people, animals, objects - to put a name to an episode represented in images. Those scenes most frequently represented in art have been selected a characteristic picture opens each of the seventeen chapters and, in the margins, Brunor's illustrations are a source of information and recreation.
